Discover how to size pallet rack beams for heavy loads. Learn about load capacity, span, deflection, and beam types with Rocket Racking.
Pallet rack beams are the most critical components in any warehouse racking system. When storing heavy loads, selecting the right beam size is essential to ensure structural safety, prevent deflection, and maximize racking performance.
At Rocket Racking, we manufacture custom pallet rack beams designed to support loads ranging from 500 kg to 5,000 kg per level. In this guide, we’ll explain how to calculate the correct beam size for your storage needs.

What Is a Pallet Rack Beam?
Beams are the horizontal bars that connect two upright frames in a pallet racking system. They support the pallets and transfer load to the uprights.
Common types include:
- Box Beams: Enclosed shape, high strength
- Step Beams: With a step lip to support decking
- Structural Beams: Made of I-beam steel for extreme loads
Key Factors in Beam Sizing
- Load Weight Per Level
- Add the total weight of pallets on each level.
- Example: 3 pallets × 1,000 kg = 3,000 kg per level.
- Beam Length (Span)
- The distance between two uprights.
- Standard spans: 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.6m. Longer spans require stronger beams.
- Load Type
- Point loads (e.g., drums) vs. uniformly distributed loads (pallets).
- Point loads create more stress on localized beam areas.
- Allowable Deflection
- Industry standard is L/180 (length ÷ 180).
- For a 3,600 mm beam: Max deflection = 20 mm.
Example Beam Calculation
Let’s say you have:
- 3 pallets per level (1,000 kg each)
- Beam span = 2.7 m
- Uniform load distribution
Required beam:
- Capacity: ≥ 3,000 kg
- Height: Typically 100–140 mm
- Thickness: 1.5–2.0 mm steel, depending on beam profile
Rocket Racking uses engineering software to verify beam stress, deflection, and safety factors.
Other Considerations
- Use pallet support bars for concentrated loads
- Add wire decking for weight distribution
- Always match beams with certified uprights
- Anchor frames properly to resist tipping
